For those applications where superior machinability is desired and where slightly lower corrosion resistance is satisfactory 440c can be supplied. It is also used to make knife blades. It is usually heat treated to reach hardness of 58 60 hrc it is a bearing steel and used in rolling contact stainless bearings e g. Consequently a high car bon potential may be suitable for short carbur izing times but not for prolonged carburizing.

Selection of carbon potential also depends on the carburizing response of a particular steel.
